Three Exercises That Will Help Prevent Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow is a condition in which the tendons within the elbow joint become inflamed or even torn. Though named for its common occurrence in tennis players, it often affects golfers, bowlers, and even avid gardeners, too. It’s easier to prevent tennis elbow than it is to treat it, and the best way to prevent the condition is by strengthening the muscles in the arms and forearms. Performing the following three exercises will help you prevent tennis elbow. Exercise 1: Downward and upward wrist stretches. These stretches ensure that the muscles leading from the back and front of the hand to the elbow are kept loose, which reduces strain on the tendons. Place your arm across a table, with your wrist and hand dangling over the edge. Bend your wrist so that your palm is contracted towards your body. Hold this position to the count of ten, and then bend your wrist the opposite way, drawing the top of your hand back towards your body. Hold this position to the count of ten, and then relax. Repeat this exercise 5 times with each hand. Exercise 2: Weighted wrist curls. This exercise strengthens the muscles in your lower arm and also helps maintain your range of motion, ensuring that the strain on the tendons in your elbow is distributed more evenly. Hold a light weight (2 or 3 pounds is sufficient) in your hand. Stretch your arm out to the side of your body with your palm facing down. Curl your wrist, drawing the weight up towards the ceiling, and then uncurl it towards the floor. Then, turn your arm so that your palm is facing forward, and repeat the motion. Do this exercise 5 times with each hand. Exercise 3: Traditional pullups. Pullups are actually great for preventing tennis elbow because they strengthen both the upper and lower arms while also working the muscles in the wrists. If you cannot do a full pullup, try using the pullup assist machine at your gym. This machine will offset some of your weight, allowing you to go through the pullup motion without having to support your entire body weight. When doing pullups, make sure your hands are placed shoulder-width apart. Start from a hanging position, and use your arm muscles to pull your body up until your chin is above the bar. Then, slowly lower yourself down again. Do about 5 pullups a day, either assisted or unassisted, and you’ll reduce your risk of tennis elbow. Repeat the process 5 times. Go Blinky Blinky When you’re concentrating on something, you don’t blink as often as you should. As a result, your eyes dry out and get more tired than they should. This exercise will help moisturize your eyes, which will help them relax. Take a few minutes and blink once every 4-5 seconds. Repeat the exercise several times throughout the day. To Infinity and Back The muscles in your eyes can get strained from focusing on the same thing all day. With this simple exercise, you’ll be able to focus on something else and exercise your eye muscles at the same time. While staring straight ahead, trace the infinity sign, or sideways figure eight, with your eyes. Start from the right and work left for about 15 seconds. Switch directions and trace the infinity sign in the opposite direction for another 15 seconds. Repeat this exercise whenever you feel your eye muscles straining. Look On Up If your job has you looking down a lot, you might notice your eyes begin to droop. Stretch your eyes the same way you stretch your legs throughout the day. Put your shoulders back and look straight ahead. Without moving your head, look up and hold it for about 5 seconds. Now relax your eyes for another 5 seconds. Repeat the exercise 5 times. As people age, they experience natural degeneration of the eye muscles. How to Prevent (or Slow) AMD? There are several medical treatments available to treat AMD once it has already started. The best practice would be to delay the onset of AMD as long as possible. Some methods that have been shown to delay the onset of AMD include: Addressing lifestyle risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, being overweight, or lack of exercise Taking certain antioxidant and mineral supplements that have shown some positive benefits in delaying or reducing the impact of AMD Eating a healthy diet consisting of fish and green, leafy vegetables Once a person is diagnosed with intermediate AMD, some other options are often recommended. Again, vitamin supplements, such as vitamin C, E, and beta-carotene, can help reduce the risk of progressing from intermediate to late AMD; zinc and copper supplements can also help reduce the risk. For those with intermediate AMD who have smoked or are current smokers, beta-carotene increases the risk of developing lung cancer. Instead, those persons (and non-smokers, too) can use a combination of lutein and zeaxanthin. A doctor has to determine the correct dosages for each patient.
