Research is beginning to turn against hot and cold treatments done during office hours. However, there is one big reason why you still might want to offer them as an option to patients: The treatments feel good.  Feeling Good Is the Key Adding heat or ice to an injured joint or other body part can help alleviate pain. If you have patients come into the office who are simply not having a good day and who are in pain, the treatments could help them feel more comfortable — enough so that they can complete the rest of their therapy tasks during that appointment. Heat and ice (or other cool packs, if you want) have come under scrutiny because they have often been used in the past as possible cures. But Canadian magazine Maclean’s noted in May 2014, for example, that research was showing that applying ice to an injury doesn’t help the injury heal, and in fact, it might actually delay healing. For the past several months, medical organizations such as the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) have been working with Consumer Reports to identify just which office procedures are really worth the money. While this is a campaign in the United States, the results and recommendations are worth noting in Canada as well, given the research spotlighted by Maclean’s. The APTA noted that heat and ice/cool treatments did nothing to heal injuries. Because patients can easily apply heating pads and ice packs at home, the treatments are now considered to be relatively useless as an in-office procedure. But again, that’s if you try to use them as cures, and not just comforting additions to therapy. Keeping Them as an Option You might want to try offering hot and cold treatments only as temporary pain relief. Three Exercises That Will Help Prevent Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow is a condition in which the tendons within the elbow joint become inflamed or even torn. Though named for its common occurrence in tennis players, it often affects golfers, bowlers, and even avid gardeners, too. It’s easier to prevent tennis elbow than it is to treat it, and the best way to prevent the condition is by strengthening the muscles in the arms and forearms. Performing the following three exercises will help you prevent tennis elbow. Exercise 1: Downward and upward wrist stretches. These stretches ensure that the muscles leading from the back and front of the hand to the elbow are kept loose, which reduces strain on the tendons. Place your arm across a table, with your wrist and hand dangling over the edge. Bend your wrist so that your palm is contracted towards your body. Hold this position to the count of ten, and then bend your wrist the opposite way, drawing the top of your hand back towards your body. Hold this position to the count of ten, and then relax. Repeat this exercise 5 times with each hand. Exercise 2: Weighted wrist curls. This exercise strengthens the muscles in your lower arm and also helps maintain your range of motion, ensuring that the strain on the tendons in your elbow is distributed more evenly. Hold a light weight (2 or 3 pounds is sufficient) in your hand. Stretch your arm out to the side of your body with your palm facing down. Curl your wrist, drawing the weight up towards the ceiling, and then uncurl it towards the floor. Then, turn your arm so that your palm is facing forward, and repeat the motion. Do this exercise 5 times with each hand. Exercise 3: Traditional pullups. Pullups are actually great for preventing tennis elbow because they strengthen both the upper and lower arms while also working the muscles in the wrists. If you cannot do a full pullup, try using the pullup assist machine at your gym. This machine will offset some of your weight, allowing you to go through the pullup motion without having to support your entire body weight. When doing pullups, make sure your hands are placed shoulder-width apart. Start from a hanging position, and use your arm muscles to pull your body up until your chin is above the bar. Then, slowly lower yourself down again. Do about 5 pullups a day, either assisted or unassisted, and you’ll reduce your risk of tennis elbow. Damaged veins may also lead to some areas of your retina not receiving any blood flow at all, which can cause permanent damage and blindness. How does HIV cause retinopathy? The exact way that HIV damages your retinas isn’t completely understood, but researchers have some ideas. They think that the virus causes changes to the cells that make up your retinas and the veins that supply them with blood. These changes lead to damage or death of the cells. Researchers also think that the changes to your immune system associated with HIV may play a role. Is retinopathy a common complication of HIV? Place your hands over your eyes, with the heel of your hands resting on your cheeks and your fingers lightly resting on your forehead. Close your eyes for about 10 seconds and then open them. Repeat the process 5 times. Go Blinky Blinky When you’re concentrating on something, you don’t blink as often as you should. As a result, your eyes dry out and get more tired than they should. This exercise will help moisturize your eyes, which will help them relax. Take a few minutes and blink once every 4-5 seconds. Repeat the exercise several times throughout the day. To Infinity and Back The muscles in your eyes can get strained from focusing on the same thing all day. With this simple exercise, you’ll be able to focus on something else and exercise your eye muscles at the same time. While staring straight ahead, trace the infinity sign, or sideways figure eight, with your eyes. Start from the right and work left for about 15 seconds. Switch directions and trace the infinity sign in the opposite direction for another 15 seconds. Repeat this exercise whenever you feel your eye muscles straining. Look On Up If your job has you looking down a lot, you might notice your eyes begin to droop. Stretch your eyes the same way you stretch your legs throughout the day. Put your shoulders back and look straight ahead. Without moving your head, look up and hold it for about 5 seconds. Now relax your eyes for another 5 seconds. Repeat the exercise 5 times.
